The Usefulness of the U.N.

 

Pour cette réunion, à cause de certaines communications manquées, on a dû pivoter pour achever notre heure correctement, mais nous l’avons réussi.  Theodore nous a offert un discours a propos de l’ONU qui a rappelé l’importance de cette organisation et de ses objectifs, et provoqué des questions intéressantes. 

L’équipe d’évaluateurs, menée par Tyler, comprenait Nirva, Olga, et Militza.  Jacki et Pat, elles aussi, ont offert des critiques constructives. Nous avons fait des acquis et ri un peu, et pensé aux membres qui ne pouvaient pas assister.  Nous espérons vous voir la prochane fois, le 23 juin à 17 :50.  Pensez à choisir votre rôle préféré dès maintenant.  A bientôt !

 

For this meeting, because of a few missed communications, we had to pivot to complete the hour in good Toastmasters fashion, but we succeeded.  Theodore gave a thought

-provoking speech about the United Nations that reminded us of the importance of both the organization and its objectives. 

Tyler lead the team of evaluators comprised of Militza, Nirva, and Olga, with Jacki and Pat providing additional constructive criticism.  We learned a little and laughed a little, and thought of the members who could not be present.  We hope to see you all next time, June 23^rd at 5:50 pm.  Please do not forget to claim your favorite role as soon as you can.  See you soon!

Love in Three Languages

 

Our very special multilingual TM chapter “toasted” the rover Perseverance’s successfully making the tenth ever unmanned soft-landing on Mars this month.  New members flexed their chops, Olga as TM, Sylvia as a competitor to be District 24’s choice for the international speech contest, Alex as a speaker, Tyler as evaluator, and Theodore as Listening Post.  Wendy won the Table Topics with her account of an elementary school crush who ungallantly challenged her to a fight!

A translation of a brief passage Gary Chapman’s The Five Love Languages into Russian, reminding us of the importance of connection in a world where it is increasingly hard to achieve concluded an evening themed “Love in many languages.”  Great job, everyone, especially our new members.  We thank you for your great work!  Looking forward to seeing everyone again on March 10^th!

 

Notre chapitre multilingue a fêté l’atterrissage en douceur du rover nommé « Persévérance » ce mois-ci.  De nouveaux membres ont fait leurs preuves – Olga comme Toastmaster, Sylvia en orateur dans l’attente d’être concurrente pour meilleur discours du district 24, Alex comme orateur, Tyler comme évaluateur, et Theodore comme poste d’écoute.  Wendy à gagné les Topics avec son souvenir d’une fin humiliante à une illusion amoureuse d’enfance. 

Une traduction en russe d’un extrait du livre The Five Love Languages de Gary Chapman qui nous rappelle l’importance du rapport intime dans un monde hostile a conclu notre réunion.  Nous vous remercions tous vivement pour votre bon travail, et avons hâtes de vous revoir le 10 mars !

Février: de beaux paysages, et de la faiblesse humaine face au...chocolat

 Successful first meeting of February with Jacki, an experienced Toastmaster, stepping in to cover the role of General Evaluator and offering helpful suggestions for improvement. (Thank you, Jacki!)  Both prepared speeches (Sylvia’s and Olga’s), touched on the beauty of the natural world, offering images of Yosemite National Park and the countryside near the Volga River in Russia.  Our special guest, Martha, won the Table Topics with a humorous anecdote about a box of special chocolates.  See you all on the 24^th for “Love in Many Languages.” 

Notre première reunion de février est réussie et perfectionnée grâce à Jacki, General Evaluator, Toastmaster expérimentée et femme qui tombe à pique. (Merci, Jacki !)  Les deux discours préparés (Sylvia’s and Olga’s) ont touché sur la beauté de la nature et nous donnaient un aperçu Yosemite National Park et le paysage près du fleuve Volga en Russie.  Notre invitée spéciale, Martha, a gagné la séance « Table Topics » avec un souvenir humoristique d’une boîte de chocolats tentants.  On se voit le 24 pour « Love in Many Languages. »

Meeting: January 27th

 Olga led the meeting as Toastmaster of the Day, with the theme of "mentoring for success". Alex was our timer, Jacki was our Ah-counter and Grammarian, Anusree was our Listening Post. Ponni was the General Evaluator and Sophie was the Table Topics Master.

Pat gave a speech about the Covid-19 vaccine; she was evaluated by Sylvia. Tyler gave a speech about his journey with French; he was evaluated by Denise.

We were thrilled to welcome guests Eileen, Maxime, Ravi, Seb and Lauren.

Maxime, Olga, Anu and Ravi answered the Table Topics questions about mentoring; Ravi won the award for the best Table Topics answer.

Olga a facilité la réunion comme Toastmaster, avec le thème de " mentorat pour le succès ". Alex était notre chronométreuse, Jacki était notre compteuse d'hésitations et grammarienne, Anusree était notre Poste d'écoute. Ponni était notre Evaluatrice Générale et Sophie était la maitresse des improvisations.

Pat a donné un discours sur le vaccin Covid-19 ; elle a été évaluée par Sylvia. Tyler a donné un discours sur son voyage avec le français ; il été évalué par Denise.

Nous avons été enchantés d'accueuillir les invités Eileen, Maxime, Ravi, Seb et Lauren.

Maxime, Olga, Anu et Ravi ont répondu aux questions d'improvisation sur le mentorat ; Ravi a gagné le prix de la meilleure réponse d'improvisation.

Meeting: January 13th

Four guests and three new members enlivened our first meeting of 2021! We heard speeches by Nirva and Sophie, encouraging us to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by social media and the Toastmasters, respectively, during the ongoing pandemic.  Alex, a visitor from Montréal introduced us to the Canadian poet Emile Nelligan.  Guest Martine won the Best Table Topics Award! We wished a very happy birthday to Jacki and Colette, and sang Joyeux Anniversaire to them both! Please come back for our next meeting January 27th, 6 pm EST, with the theme: “Mentoring for Success.”

Quatre invités et trois nouveaux membres ont animé notre première réunion de 2021 !  Nous avons écouté les discours de Nirva et de Sophie, qui nous exhortaient à profiter pleinement des occasions fournies par notre accès aux médias sociaux et notre adhésion à Toastmasters pendant la pandémie en cours.  Alex, hélant de Montréal, nous a fait connaître le poète Canadien Emile Nelligan.  Invitée Martine a gagné le prix de la meilleure improvisation ! Nous avons souhaité un joyeux anniversaire à Jacki et à Colette en chanson.  Rendez-vous le 27 janvier à 18 heures. Le thème sera : «Mentoring for Success».
