May 30 Meeting - Travels - Les voyages

Today's meeting theme was: travels. Sophie led as Toastmasters. Anusree gave her Ice Breaker speech and told us about her experiences while vacationing in Coorg, India and in West Virginia. Everyone had a chance to answer a Table Topics question on travels. Ponni told us that if she had all of the money in the world, she would return to Amsterdam during the tulips season and bring her daughter. Yewandee explained that the farthest she has traveled was Cornwall, England, where she attended a photography workshop. Anusree described the advantages and disadvantages of having TSA Pre-Check when traveling on vacation with her younger brother. Sophie talked about her fear of using AirBnB but also described how her friend went on a cross-country trip from Washington state to Virginia over several weeks, only staying at AirBnB - and he survived! Militza described her latest stay-cation and how it was not as relaxing as she had hoped. Rusty described his two favorites modes of transportation: flying and driving his Mustang, and how he can either impress or scare his passenger. Militza gave the evaluation of Anusree's speech. Rusty was our timer. Yewande was the ah-counter. Ponni was the Listening Post. We also watched on the Toastmasters International website the video of Shurooq AlBanna, 3rd place winner at the 2013 Toastmasters International Convention, with her speech "Finding the pearl."

Our next meeting is Wednesday, June 13, at 6 pm. We cannot wait to see you then!

Le thème de la réunion d'aujourd'hui était les voyages. Sophie était notre Toastmasters. Anusree a donné son discours "Briser la glace" et nous a raconté ses expériences pendant ses vacances à Coorg en Inde et en Virginie de l'Ouest. Tout le monde a eu l'occasion de répondre à une question Table Topics sur le sujet des voyages. Ponni nous a dit que si elle avait toute l'argent du monde, elle retournerait à Amsterdam pendant la saison des tulipes et elle emmènerait sa fille. Yewandee a expliqué que l'endroit le plus éloigné où elle a été est dans les Cornouailles, Angleterre, où elle a participé à un stage de photographie. Anusree a décrit les avantages et les inconvénients d'avoir TSA Pre-Check quand elle voyage en vacances avec son petit frère. Sophie nous a parlé de sa peur d'utiliser AirBnB mais nous a aussi décrit comment son ami a voyagé à travers le pays depuis l'état de Washington jusqu'à la Virginie pendant plusieurs semaines en ne restant que dans des AirBnB - et il a survécu ! Militza a décrit sa dernière vacance à la maison et comment ça n'a pas été aussi relaxant qu'elle espérait. Rusty a décrit ses deux modes de transport favoris : voler et conduire sa Mustang, et comment il peut impressionner ou faire peur à son passager. Militza a évalué le discours d'Anusree. Rusty était notre chronométreur. Yewande était le compteur d'hésitations. Ponni était le poste d'écoute. Nous avons aussi regardé sur le site de Toastmasters International la vidéo de Shurooq AlBanna, gagnante de la 3ème place à la Convention Toastmasters International de 2013, avec son discours "Trouver la perle."

Notre prochaine rencontre est mercredi 13 juin à 18 heures. Nous avons hâte de vous y voir !

Once we reach 20 applications, we will be able to charter the club officially with Toastmasters International. May 16 Meeting - The Academy Awards / Les Oscars

Our meeting theme on May 16th was The Academy Awards. Although we had only five participants (perhaps others were discouraged by the torrential rain), we had a very active, fun, and enjoyable meeting. We had two words or phrases of the day: (1) in English, the word of the day was "decimate" and (2) in French, the phrase of the day was "faire demi tour." Sophie explained the basics of kayaking, including important safety tips, for anyone to kayak for the first time. She also told about her recent kayaking adventures. Militza gave a constructive evaluation of the prepared speech. Rusty led the Table Topics session, in both French and English, and we answered all six questions, related to the meeting theme. Yewande was the timer for the very first time. Linda was the General Evaluator and the Ah-Counter. We also enjoyed some sweet treats: brownies, madeleines and palmiers.

Our next meeting is Wednesday May 30, at 6:00 pm, in room 201, at Saint Michael Catholic Church, 4491 Springfield Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060.

Le thème de notre réunion du 16 mai était Les Oscars. Même que nous n'étions que cinq participants (peut-être que les autres ont été découragés par les pluies torrentielles), nous avons eu une réunion très active, drôle, et agréable. Nous avons eu deux mots ou phrases du jour : (1) en anglais, le mot du jour était "decimate" et (2) en français, la phrase du jour était "faire demi tour." Sophie a expliqué les bases du kayak, y compris les très importantes mesures de sûreté, pour que n'importe qui puisse faire du kayak pour la première fois. Elle nous a aussi parlé de ses aventures récentes de kayak. Militza a donné une évaluation constructive du discours préparé. Rusty a mené la session de Table Topics, en français et en anglais, et nous avons répondu aux six questions liées au thème de la réunion. Yewande était le Chronométreur pour la première fois. Linda était l'Évaluateur Général et aussi le Compteur d'hésitations. Nous avons aussi apprécié des petites gourmandises: gateaux au chocolat, madeleines, et palmiers.
