New bilingual French-English Toastmasters club in Richmond, VA

I am working to charter and launch a new Toastmasters in Richmond, VA -- a BILINGUAL French-English club. We had our first demonstration meeting today and we have our next meetings scheduled, as shown below.

Je suis en train de former un nouveau club Toastmasters, bilingue en français et en anglais. Nous avons eu notre première réunion aujourd'hui et nous avons nos prochaines réunions plannifiées comme ci-dessous.

Toastmasters - Where Leaders are Made.

The concept is to practice in your non-native language. If you are a French native speaker, you'll speak in English during the meetings; if you are an English native speaker, you'll speak in French during the meetings. The meetings will provide a supportive and friendly environment where you can practice speaking in your nonnative language, while receiving some constructive feedback on your speaking skills, language skills, and leadership skills.

L'idée de ce club est de parler dans votre deuxième (ou troisième) langue, pas dans votre langue maternelle. Si votre langue maternelle est le français, vous parlerez en anglais pendant les réunions du club ; si votre langue maternelle est l'anglais, vous parlerez en français pendant les réunions du club. Dans le cadre accueillant et amical de ces réunions, vous pourrez donner des discours dans une langue autre que votre langue maternelle et vous recevrez des conseils pratiques pour améliorer vos talents d'orateur, vos talents linguistiques, ainsi que vos talents de dirigeant.

New Project

Let me tell you about a project I'm working on: the creation of a bilingual French-English Toastmasters club in Richmond, VA. I belong to Toastmasters (https://www.toastmasters.org) since 2008. For a long time, I've been thinking of creating a bilingual club where members would speak in their second language: if their native tongue is French, they will speak in English to improve their English; if their native tongue is English, they will speak in French to improve their French. That way, everyone is speaking at a comparable level: the goal is to improve your second language in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Toastmasters is an international organization, with more than 352,000 members, in 16,400 clubs in 141 countries around the world. There are more than 125 clubs in Virginia.

The Toastmasters clubs meet twice, three times or four times a month. A typical club meeting consists of three parts: prepared speeches (each between 5 and 7 minutes), a Table Topics section for impromptu speaking with speeches of 1 to 2 minutes answering random questions, followed by an evaluation section where evaluators provide evaluations of the prepared speeches in 2 to 3 minutes each.

The creation of a new Toastmasters club begins with a demonstration meeting with potential members. The demonstration meeting is scheduled for Saturday April 14.

Je veux vous faire part d’un projet sur lequel je travaille : la formation d’un club Toastmasters bilingue français-anglais à Richmond, VA. Je fais partie de Toastmasters (https://www.toastmasters.org) depuis 2008. Depuis longtemps, je pense à former un club bilingue où les membres parleront en utilisant leur deuxième langue : s’ils sont français, ils parleront en anglais pour améliorer leur anglais ; s’ils sont anglophones, ils parleront en français pour améliorer leur français. Du coup, tout le monde est au même niveau : le but est de s'améliorer dans une atmosphère amicale et supportive.

Toastmasters est une organization internationale, avec plus de 352.000 membres, dans 16.400 clubs dans 141 pays autour du monde. Il y a plus de 125 clubs en Virginie.

Les clubs Toastmasters se réunissent deux, trois ou quatre fois par mois. Une réunion typique comprend trois parties : des discours préparés (chacun entre 5 et 7 minutes en général), une partie de discours impromptu de 1-2 minutes en réponse à des questions aléatoires, puis une partie d’évaluations des discours préparés (chaque évaluation dure entre 2 et 3 minutes).

La formation d’un nouveau club commence par une réunion démonstration avec des membres potentiels. La réunion démonstration aura lieu le samedi 14 avril.
