Christmas is celebrated around the world - and here, too!

Noël se fête partout - et ici, aussi !

On December 9th, RVA Bilingual French-English Toastmasters Club celebrated the season by sharing anecdotes, poems, and stories from several traditions and cultures.  One that we particularly appreciated was that of a grandmother who, every Christmas Eve, would put on a dress she never wore on any other day of the year.  During Christmas mass, she would excuse herself saying she needed to go home to "close the window," when in fact she would make it look as if Father Christmas had stopped by to eat the cookies the children had left for him!

Le 9 décembre a vu le club RVA Bilingual French-English Toastmasters célébrer la saison en partageant des anecdotes, poèmes, et chansons de plusieurs traditions et cultures.  Une histoire qui nous a amusé c'est celle d'une grandmère qui, la veille de Noël, mettait une robe qu'elle ne portait à aucun autre moment de l'année.  Pendant la messe de minuit, elle s'excusait pour rentrer parce qu'elle devait "fermer la fenêtre," alors qu'en réalité elle allait faire en sorte que les enfants voient que le Père Noël était venu manger les biscuits laissés !

Meeting: November 11th

Our Veterans’ Day meeting (also our Virtual Open House) was cheered by a humorous speech on the trials of an orange tomcat given by Rusty. We were thrilled to welcome seven guests (eight, if you count an inquisitive cat). Elyanne, one of our first-time visitors, won the Best Table Topics Award. Congratulations! We heard Denise cleverly use the English word of the day: valiant; and Jacki used the French word of the day: se promener. We hope everyone had fun! Please come to the next meeting on December 9th!

Meeting: October 28th

We welcomed 4 guests this past meeting: Jacki, Denise, Annat, and Belen.

Ann was our Toastmaster and the theme was Halloween.  Ponni was our General Evaluator; Theo, our Listening Post; Militza, our Timer, Denise, our Grammarian; and Nirva, our Ah-Counter.

Sylvia workshopped a speech entitled "Create the Business Plan That's Right For You." Pat evaluated, and the rest of the group offered feedback as Sylvia will present this again to another group later.

Pat used the Word of the Day: énoncer

Annat won Best Table Topics.

Nous avons accueilli 4 invitées ce mercredi : Jacki, Denise, Annat, et Belen.

Ann était notre Toastmaster et le thème était Halloween. Ponni était notre Évaluateur Général ; Théodore était notre Poste d'Écoute ; Militza était notre chronométreuse ; Denise était notre Grammairienne et Nirva était notre Compteuse d'Hésitations.

Sylvia a donné un discours, "Create the Business Plan That's Right for You." Pat l'a évalué et le reste du groupe a fait des commentaires comme Silvia le présentera pour un autre groupe plus tard.

Pat a employe le mot du jour : "énoncer."

Annat a gagné le prix du meilleur Table Topics.

Meeting: October 14th

We welcomed three guests tonight: Jacki, Denise, and Annat. 

Nirva was our Toastmaster and the theme was autumn. Annat was General Evaluator; Pat was Listening Post; Théodore was the Timer; Rusty was the Grammarian and Militza was the Ah-Counter.

Ann gave a speech about communication styles with an example from the poem Aeneid by poet Virgil; Jacki evaluated her speech.

During the Table Topics session led by Sophie, Pat, Denise, Linda, Militza, Temple and Jacki answered the questions. The best Table Topics speaker was Jacki.

Nous avons accueilli trois invités ce soir : Jacki, Denise, et Annat.

Nirva était notre Toastmaster et le thème était l'automne. Annat était notre Évaluateur Général ; Pat était notre Poste d'Écoute ; Théodore était notre Chronométreur ; Rusty était notre Grammairien et Militza était notre Compteuse d'Hésitations.

Meeting: September 23rd

 We welcomed three guests tonight: Théodore, Jacki, and Laura. 

Sophie was our Toastmaster and the theme was Apple Season. Ponni was General Evaluator and Listening Post; Temple was the Timer; Martha was the Grammarian and Laura was the Ah-Counter.

Cheryl gave a speech about the right to informed consent; Nirva evaluated her speech. Pat gave a speech about the coronavirus, partnerships and scientific challenges; Jacki evaluated her speech.

During the Table Topics session, Laura, Nirva, Martha, Jacki, Ponni and Temple answered the questions. The best Table Topics speaker in French was Jacki; Martha was the best Table Topics speaker in English.

Sophie était notre Toastmaster et le thème était la saison des pommes. Ponni était notre Évaluateur Général et Poste d'Écoute ; Temple était notre Chronométreur ; Martha était notre Grammairienne et Laura était notre Compteuse d'Hésitations.

Cheryl a donné un discours sur le droit d'acceptation informée ; Nirva a évalué son discours. Pat a donné un discours sur le coronavirus, partenariats et défis scientifiques ; Jacki a évalué son discours.

Pendant la session de Table Topics, Laura, Nirva, Martha, Jacki, Ponni et Temple ont répondu aux questions. Le meilleur Table Topics en français était Jacki ; Martha était le meilleur Table Topics en anglais.

Militza, as our Toastmaster, led us through the history of pools going back thousands of years ago; her theme was "pool parties." We welcomed three guests: Laura (returning), Théodore and Yalibi; we expect to see them at our next meeting!

Linda was the General Evaluator, Nirva was the timer, Rusty was the Ah-Counter, Laura was the Grammarian, and Temple was the Listening Post.

Our two speakers were Anusree and Colette. Anusree spoke about the type of Indian dancing that she has been learning and practicing and the lessons she has learned through her dancing. Colette spoke about the three reasons why she love India: the 1937 movie "Elephant Boy", her passion for elephants, and her love of root suspended bridges. Cheryl evaluated Anusree's speech and Sophie evaluated Colette's speech.

Ponni was our Table Topics master. Linda, Laura, Cheryl, Nirva, Colette, and Temple answered the Table Topics questions. Cheryl won the Best Table Topics Award!

Militza, en tant que Toastmaster, nous a conduit à travers l'histoire des piscines depuis des milliers d'années ; son thème était "fêtes au bord de la piscine." Nous avons accueilli trois invités : Laura, Théodore et Yalibi; nous nous attendons à les revoir à notre prochaine réunion !

Linda était l'Évaluateur Général, Nirva était la Chronométreuse, Rusty était le Compteur d'Hésitations, Laura était la Grammairienne, et Temple était le Poste d'Écoute.

Nos deux présentatrices étaient Anusree et Colette. Anusree a parlé du type de dance Indienne qu'elle a appris et pratiqué et les lessons qu'elle a tiré de sa dance. Colette a parlé des trois raisons pour lesquelles elle aime l'Inde : le film de 1937 "Elephant Boy", sa passion pour les éléphants, et son amour des ponts suspendus en racines. Cheryl a évalué le discours d'Anusree et Sophie a évalué le discours de Colette.

Ponni était notre Maîtresse des Improvisations. Linda, Laura, Cheryl, Nirva, Colette, et Temple ont répondu aux questions d'improvisation. Cheryl a gagné le prix de la meilleure improvisation !
