Christmas is celebrated around the world - and here, too!

On December 9th, RVA Bilingual French-English Toastmasters Club celebrated the season by sharing anecdotes, poems, and stories from several traditions and cultures.  One that we particularly appreciated was that of a grandmother who, every Christmas Eve, would put on a dress she never wore on any other day of the year.  During Christmas mass, she would excuse herself saying she needed to go home to "close the window," when in fact she would make it look as if Father Christmas had stopped by to eat the cookies the children had left for him!

Le 9 décembre a vu le club RVA Bilingual French-English Toastmasters célébrer la saison en partageant des anecdotes, poèmes, et chansons de plusieurs traditions et cultures.  Une histoire qui nous a amusé c'est celle d'une grandmère qui, la veille de Noël, mettait une robe qu'elle ne portait à aucun autre moment de l'année.  Pendant la messe de minuit, elle s'excusait pour rentrer parce qu'elle devait "fermer la fenêtre," alors qu'en réalité elle allait faire en sorte que les enfants voient que le Père Noël était venu manger les biscuits laissés !

Meeting: November 11th

Our Veterans’ Day meeting (also our Virtual Open House) was cheered by a humorous speech on the trials of an orange tomcat given by Rusty. We were thrilled to welcome seven guests (eight, if you count an inquisitive cat). Elyanne, one of our first-time visitors, won the Best Table Topics Award. Congratulations! We heard Denise cleverly use the English word of the day: valiant; and Jacki used the French word of the day: se promener. We hope everyone had fun! Please come to the next meeting on December 9th!

Meeting: October 28th

We welcomed 4 guests this past meeting: Jacki, Denise, Annat, and Belen.

Ann was our Toastmaster and the theme was Halloween.  Ponni was our General Evaluator; Theo, our Listening Post; Militza, our Timer, Denise, our Grammarian; and Nirva, our Ah-Counter.

Sylvia workshopped a speech entitled "Create the Business Plan That's Right For You." Pat evaluated, and the rest of the group offered feedback as Sylvia will present this again to another group later.

Annat won Best Table Topics.

Meeting: October 14th

We welcomed three guests tonight: Jacki, Denise, and Annat. 

Nirva was our Toastmaster and the theme was autumn. Annat was General Evaluator; Pat was Listening Post; Théodore was the Timer; Rusty was the Grammarian and Militza was the Ah-Counter.

Ann gave a speech about communication styles with an example from the poem Aeneid by poet Virgil; Jacki evaluated her speech.

During the Table Topics session led by Sophie, Pat, Denise, Linda, Militza, Temple and Jacki answered the questions. The best Table Topics speaker was Jacki.

Sophie was our Toastmaster and the theme was Apple Season. Ponni was General Evaluator and Listening Post; Temple was the Timer; Martha was the Grammarian and Laura was the Ah-Counter.

Cheryl gave a speech about the right to informed consent; Nirva evaluated her speech. Pat gave a speech about the coronavirus, partnerships and scientific challenges; Jacki evaluated her speech.

During the Table Topics session, Laura, Nirva, Martha, Jacki, Ponni and Temple answered the questions. The best Table Topics speaker in French was Jacki; Martha was the best Table Topics speaker in English.

Meeting: September 9

 

Militza, as our Toastmaster, led us through the history of pools going back thousands of years ago; her theme was "pool parties." We welcomed three guests: Laura (returning), Théodore and Yalibi; we expect to see them at our next meeting!

Linda was the General Evaluator, Nirva was the timer, Rusty was the Ah-Counter, Laura was the Grammarian, and Temple was the Listening Post.

Our two speakers were Anusree and Colette. Anusree spoke about the type of Indian dancing that she has been learning and practicing and the lessons she has learned through her dancing. Colette spoke about the three reasons why she love India: the 1937 movie "Elephant Boy", her passion for elephants, and her love of root suspended bridges. Cheryl evaluated Anusree's speech and Sophie evaluated Colette's speech.

Ponni was our Table Topics master. Linda, Laura, Cheryl, Nirva, Colette, and Temple answered the Table Topics questions. Cheryl won the Best Table Topics Award!

Militza, en tant que Toastmaster, nous a conduit à travers l'histoire des piscines depuis des milliers d'années ; son thème était "fêtes au bord de la piscine." Nous avons accueilli trois invités : Laura, Théodore et Yalibi; nous nous attendons à les revoir à notre prochaine réunion !

Linda était l'Évaluateur Général, Nirva était la Chronométreuse, Rusty était le Compteur d'Hésitations, Laura était la Grammairienne, et Temple était le Poste d'Écoute.

Nos deux présentatrices étaient Anusree et Colette. Anusree a parlé du type de dance Indienne qu'elle a appris et pratiqué et les lessons qu'elle a tiré de sa dance. Colette a parlé des trois raisons pour lesquelles elle aime l'Inde : le film de 1937 "Elephant Boy", sa passion pour les éléphants, et son amour des ponts suspendus en racines. Cheryl a évalué le discours d'Anusree et Sophie a évalué le discours de Colette.

Ponni était notre Maîtresse des Improvisations. Linda, Laura, Cheryl, Nirva, Colette, et Temple ont répondu aux questions d'improvisation. Cheryl a gagné le prix de la meilleure improvisation !

Meeting: August 12th

Our theme for this meeting was "Crazy Weather" and how timely it was! Ann, as Toastmaster, facilitated the meeting expertly. Ponni was the General Evaluator, our Grammarian was Pat, our Ah-Counter was Temple, our Listening Post was Cheryl, and our timer was Rusty.

Sylvia gave a speech in French about her favorite impressionist painter, Claude Monet. She gave us a lot of information about Monet's life and gave life to her story with vivid expressive words. Pat evaluated Sylvia's speech, focusing on pronunciation and intonation (as Sylvia had asked).

Militza, as our Table Topics Master, asked us six interesting questions related to the weather. It was fun to hear how Alex, Martha, Temple, Ponni, Cheryl and Pat answered. Martha won the prize for best Table Topics answer.

We welcome two guests: Alex from Montréal, Québec and Martha our Area Director.

Notre thème pour cette réunion était la météo folle, et comme c'était le parfait moment !

Ann, en tant que Toastmaster, a dirigé la réunion comme une experte. Ponni était l'Évaluateur Général, notre Grammairienne était Pat, notre Compteur d'hésitations était Temple, notre Poste d'Écoute était Cheryl, et notre chronométreur était Rusty.

Sylvia a fait un discours en français sur son peintre impressionist favori, Claude Monet. Elle a nous donné plein d'information sur la vie de Monet et elle a donné vie à son histoire avec des mots très expressifs. Pat a évalué le discours de Sylvia, en particulier la prononciation et l'intonation (comme lui avait demandé Sylvia).

Militza, en tant que notre maître des improvisations, nous a posé six questions intéressantes liées à la météo. C'était drôle d'écouter comment Alex, Martha, Temple, Ponni, Cheryl et Pat ont répondu. Martha a gagné le prix de la meilleure réponse Table Topics.

Nous avons accueilli deux invités : Alex de Montréal, Québec et Martha notre Directrice de secteur.

Meeting: July 22nd

Our meeting took us on vacations that we dream about, the theme being Vacations and the words of the day were "dream" in English and "rêve" in French.
The featured speaker was Pat.  Her speech "Black Lives Matter in Europe" included slides that highlighted the impact of Africans living in Europe.

General Evaluator: Rusty 
Evaluator:  Sylvia, commended Pat for always having such interesting and enlightening topics.

Grammarian report: Nirva - Noted a few grammatical errors but felt that we did well overall.
Listening Post: Ponni
Timer: Militza

Table Topics Master, Cheryl, had us thinking about vacations, past, present and future.
Ponni spoke on her opinion about staycations.
Arusee explained why she would or would not scale Mt. Everest in August.
Nirva told us about a state she has never been to.
Linda explained how she would spend $1 million by Labor Day.
Sylvia told of us three famous people she would invite on her vacation.

We welcomed Lily, a guest of Nirva, who enjoyed the meeting and will come back for a visit.

Discussion followed regarding the timing for speeches that are a combination of French/English which makes a speech longer than the required time.  Linda stated that Toastmasters does not have a set time and feels that the club can set the rule.  It was also noted that native English speakers should present in French and non-native English speakers should present in English.  Pat feels that presenting in French gives value to members who do not have a chance to hear French on a regular basis (i.e., Sophie, Militza).

Notre réunion nous a emmené en vacances dont nous rêvons, the thème étant les vacances et les mots du jour étant "dream" en anglais et "rêve" en français.

Sylvia nous a parlé des trois personnages connus qu'elle inviterait pour passer les vacances avec elle.

Nous avons accueilli Lily, une invitée de Nirva, qui a aimé la réunion et qui reviendra pour une autre visite.

Nous avons aussi discuté la durée des discours qui sont en français et en anglais, ce qui fait que le discours est plus long que la durée prescrite dans le projet.  Linda a dit que Toastmasters n'a pas de durée déterminée et pense que le club peut décider.  Aussi les anglophones devraient parler en français et ceux qui ne sont pas anglophones devraient parler en anglais. Pat pense que parler en français apporte de la valeur aux membres qui n'ont pas souvent l'occasion de parler ou d'ententre le français (i.e., Sophie, Militza).

Meeting: July 8th

We had a great meeting. Our theme was Identity. Shannon was our Toastmaster, Ponni was our General Evaluator, Cheryl was the Timer, Rusty was the Ah-Counter, Pat was the Grammarian, and Anusree was the Listening Post. Sylvia provided the two words of the day: "Imagine" in English and "Rire" in French.
Nirva gave a speech about Leadership development and how to plan and implement a team meeting in a successful way; Militza evaluated Nirva’s speech. Militza reported that she appreciated the steps in Nirva’s speech, the emphasis on team mentality, and the imagery of the bushy tree to good organization.  The steps were connected to key points. She mentioned that it would have been nice to have anecdotes from team members. Vocal variety and eye contact were good. 

Then our guest speaker Brahima gave a speech about European cultures in French and English, how they succeeded and traded in different continents; Pat evaluated Brahima’s speech. Pat reported that Brahima’s talk was a nice follow-up to last week. A good review of history was provided. She would have like to know the answer to this question: What do you think will happen in the 2020 election, and what is its connection to U.S. elections? Overall: well-done, passionate, linked to dual identity.
Laura was the Table Topics master. Linda, Colette, Anusree, Cheryl, Pat, and Marco answered the Table Topics questions. Linda won the Best Table Topics award!

Nous avons eu une très bonne réunion. Notre thème était l'identité. Nirva a fait un discours sur le développement des capacités de leadership et comment planifier et mettre en place une réunion d'une équipe de façon efficace ; Militza a évalué le discours de Nirva. Militza a expliqué qu'elle avait aimé les étapes du discours de Nirva, le renforcement de la mentalité de l'équipe, et les images de l'arbre touffu pour une bonne organisation. Les étapes étaient connectées aux points principaux. Elle a dit que cela aurait été bien d'avoir des anecdotes des membres de l'équipe. La variété vocale et le contact des yeux étaient bons.

Puis notre orateur invité, Brahima, a donné un discours sur les cultures européennes, en français et en anglais, comment elles ont eu du succès et se sont étalées sur différents continents ; Pat a évalué le discours de Brahima. Pat a indiqué que le discours de Brahima était une bonne continuation de la dernière réunion. Une bonne synthèse de l'histoire a été donné. Elle aurait aimé savoir la réponse à cette question : que pensez-vous des élections en 2020, et quel est leur lien avec les élections américaines ? En général : très bien fait, avec de la passion, lié à la double identité.

Laura était notre Table Topics Master. Linda, Colette, Anusree, Cheryl, Pat et Marco ont répondu aux questions Table Topics. Linda a gagné le prix du meilleur Table Topics !

Club First Anniversary - July 2, 2020

Celebrate with us the one-year anniversary of our club! We chartered the club on July 2, 2019. We are thankful to our members, former members, and visitors for helping us make this first year possible.

We look forward to our second year! Come visit us, every 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 6 pm, on Zoom!

Meeting: June 24th

Our theme was the American flag. Militza was our Toastmaster, Ponni was our General Evaluator, Anusree was the Timer, Temple was the Ah-Counter, Sophie was the Grammarian, and Rusty was the Listening Post. Sophie provided the two words of the day: "celebrate" in English and "estival" in French.
Ann gave a speech about ethnocentrism and how we can change our mindset when looking at people different from us; Nirva evaluated Ann's speech. Then Sylvia gave a speech about Marie-Antoinette; Cheryl gave the evaluation of Sylvia's speech.
Pat was the Table Topics master. Sophie, Laura, Anusree, Colette, Cheryl, and Rusty answered the Table Topics questions. Cheryl won the Best Table Topics award!

We welcomed guest Brahima and his daughter Zarra, originally from Ivory Coast.
Our theme was Masks. Cheryl was our Toastmaster, Ponni was our General Evaluator, Sylvia was the Timer, Temple was the Ah-Counter, Rusty was the Grammarian, and Sophie was the Listening Post. Colette provided the two words of the day: "hope" in English and "tristesse" in French.
Nirva gave a speech about the power of words and language; Militza evaluated Nirva's speech. Then Pat gave a speech about her travels to Ivory Coast; Ann gave the evaluation of Pat's speech.
Anusree was the Table Topics master. Nirva, Sophie, Brahima and Ponni answered the Table Topics questions. Brahima won the Best Table Topics award!

We welcomed guest Julie from Canada, visiting French-English bilingual Toastmasters clubs around the world.
Our theme was summer reading. Rusty was our Toastmaster, Anusree was our General Evaluator, Cheryl was the Timer, Sylvia was the Ah-Counter, Ann was the Grammarian, and Nirva was the Listening Post. Laura provided the two words of the day: "embark" in English and "démarrer" in French.
Ponni gave a speech about her experiences at a concert of a famous Indian songwriter and singer; Militza evaluated Ponni's speech. Then Colette gave a speech about a painting she and her late husband bought on a trip to Mexico City many years ago; Pat gave the evaluation of Colette's speech.
Ann was the Table Topics master. Sylvia, Ponni, Anusree, Militza, Pat and Julie answered the Table Topics questions. Anusree won the Best Table Topics award!

We welcomed our newest member, Sylvia! We also welcomed several guests: Helen, Steph, Murielle, My, Benedicte and Akilah.
Our theme was spring cleaning. Ann was our Toastmaster, Ponni was our General Evaluator, Sophie was the Timer, Rusty was the Ah-Counter, and Temple was the Listening Post.
Anusree gave a speech about life needing some background music; Helen evaluated Anusree's speech. Then Militza gave a speech about mentoring and child's play; Pat gave the evaluation of Militza's speech.
Sylvia was the Table Topics master. Pat, Steph, Benedicte, Akilah, My and Temple answered the Table Topics questions. Benedicte won the Best Table Topics award!

Meeting: April 22nd

Our theme was Friendship. Sophie was our Toastmaster and our General Evaluator. Temple was the Ah Counter and Pat was the Grammarian. Ponni was the timer. Rusty was the Listening Post. Linda provided the two words of the day ("gumption" in English and "éponyme" in French). Laura also attended.
Nirva gave a speech from Level 3 of the Innovative Planning path, on using technology for presentations. Ann was her evaluator.
Cheryl gave her ice breaker speech from the Presentation Mastery path, on the difficulties of keeping our attention at the highest level in today's circumstances of COVID-19. Anusree was her evaluator.
Militza was the Table Topics Master; Pat, Nirva, Anusree, Sylvia (guest), Linda and Rusty answered the questions. Sylvia won the Best Table Topics award!

Notre thème était l'amitié. Sophie était notre Toastmaster et notre Évaluateur Général. Temple était le Compteur d'Hésitations et Pat était notre Grammairien. Ponni était le Chronométreur. Rusty était le Poste d'Écoute. Linda a donné les 2 mots du jour ("gumption" en anglais et "éponyme" en français). Laura était aussi présente.

Cheryl a donné son discours Briser la Glace, du chemin Presentation Mastery, sur les difficultés de garder notre attention au plus haut niveau dans les circonstances d'aujourd'hui avec le COVID-19. Anusree était son évaluateur.
Militza était le Table Topics Master; Pat, Nirva, Anusree, Sylvia (invitée), Linda et Rusty ont répondu aux questions. Sylvia a gagné la médaille du Meilleur Table Topics !

Due to the pandemic response, we held our first-ever online meeting today, with a theme of "Celebrate your creativity!"
Sophie was our Toastmaster, Ponni was our General Evaluator, Militza was our Table Topics Master, Nirva was our Ah-Counter and Grammarian, Rusty was our Timer, Temple was our Listening Post.
Pat gave a speech in French and English about the impact of the coronavirus on professors, and specifically on her French classes. Anusree was her evaluator.
Ann gave a speech in French about the French language and why we should learn to speak French. Helene was her evaluator.
The Table Topics respondents were Anusree, Danielle, Helene, Gloria, Sylvia, and Ponni. They did a great job on answering the questions from Militza, but only two reached the minimum one minute duration.
We were delighted to welcome three guests: Gloria, Sylvia, and 
Gustaf.

À cause de la réponse à la pandémie, nous avons fait notre tout première réunion en ligne aujourd'hui, avec le thème "Célébrez votre créativité !"
Sophie était notre Toastmaster, Ponni était notre Évaluateur Général, Militza était notre Table Topics Master, Nirva était notre Compteur d'Hésitations et Grammairien, Rusty était notre Chronométreur, Temple était notre Poste d'Écoute.
Pat a donné un discours en français et en anglais sur l'impact du virus corona sur les professeurs, et en particulier sur ses cours de français. Anusree était son évaluateur.
Ann a donné un discours en français sur la langue française et pourquoi on devrait apprendre à parler le français. Helene était son  évaluateur.
Ceux qui ont répondu aux questions de Table Topics étaient Anusree, Danielle, Helene, Gloria, Sylvia, et Ponni. Ils ont fait du bon travail pour répondre aux questions de Militza, mais seulement deux ont atteint le minimum d'une minute de durée.
Nous avons été enchantés d'accueillir trois invités : Gloria, Sylvia, and Gustaf.

Meeting: March 11th

Our theme was "what if...?". Sophie was our Toastmaster. We had a Table Topics Marathon, with Mokhtar as our Table Topics Master. Cheryl was our Ah-Counter, Militza was our Timer, Temple was our Listening Post, and Charlene was our General Evaluator.
Charlene (our Area Director) and Mark were our guests.
In addition to our typical 6 Table Topics questions related to the theme of the meeting, we also showed 20 photos and had members and guests talk about one photo at a time. It was a lot of fun!
Temple won the Best Table Topics Ribbon!

Notre thème était "Et si...?". Sophie était notre Toastmaster. Nous avons fait un marathon de Table Topics, avec Mokhtar comme Table Topics Master. Cheryl était notre compteur d'hésitations, Militza notre chronométreur, Temple notre Poste d'Écoute, et Charlene notre Évaluateur Général. Charlene (notre Directeur de Zone) et Mark étaient nos invités.
En plus des six questions Table Topics typiques sur le thème, nous avons aussi montré 20 photos et les membres et invités ont parlé sur chaque photo, une par une. C'était très amusant !
Temple a gagné le ruban du meilleur Table Topics !

Meeting: February 26th - Speech Contests

We had our first-ever contests, including an Evaluation Contest and an International Speech Contest. Anusree was the Contest Chair and Camellia was the Chief Judge. Thanks to the judges, ballot counters Demetri and Mari, and timers Pat and Ponni.
For the evaluation contest, Rusty was the test speaker, and Helene and Nirva evaluated him. Nirva won 1st place.
For the international speech contest, Mokhtar and Sophie gave a speech. Mokhtar spoke about having the courage to make a change as he did when he moved to the United States. Sophie spoke about applying the golden rule in her homeowners association. Sophie won 1st place.
We also had four guests, Pepper, Robert, Sansan, and Demetri.
Natenniel became a new member!

Nous avons eu notre toute première compétition, y compris la compétition d'évaluation et la compétition de discours international. Anusree était notre chef de compétition et Camellia était notre juge en chef. Merci à tous les juges, compteurs de votes Demetri et Mari, et chronométreurs Pat et Ponni.
Pour la compétition d'évaluation, Rusty a donné le discours à évaluer, et Helene et Nirva l'ont évalué. Nirva a gagné la première place.
Pour la compétition de discours international, Mokhtar et Sophie ont donné un discours. Mokhtar a parlé d'avoir le courage de changer comme il l'a fait quand il a immigré aux États-Unis. Sophie a parlé d'appliquer la règle d'or dans son association de propriétaires. Sophie a gagné la première place.
Nous avons aussi eu quatre invités, Pepper, Robert, Sansan, et Demetri.
Natenniel est devenu un nouveau membre !

FIRST SPEECH CONTEST - FEBRUARY 26th

Come to our first ever Speech contest, this Wednesday, February 26th, at 6 pm. We will have an International Speech Contest and an Evaluation Contest. It will be fun and educational!!

Venez à notre toute première compétition de discours, ce mercredi, 26 février, à 18 heures. Nous aurons une compétition de discours International et une compétition d'evaluations. Ça va être amusant et éducatif !!

Meeting: February 12th

Steven was our Toastmaster and picked the theme as Valentine's Day. We welcome our newest member, Mokhtar. Guests included Demetri and Natenniel.
Militza was the General Evaluator. The two words of the day were: enamored in English and adorer in French. Cheryl, Nirva, Steven and Helene used one of the words of the day.
We had two great speakers. Colette gave a speech in French (with slides in English) on her experiences at her retirement home. Mokhtar gave his Ice Breaker speech, about his life from Morocco and the United States. Temple gave the evaluation (first time evaluator) of Colette's speech and Nirva evaluated Mokhtar's speech. The timer was Demetri, a guest. Temple was the Ah-Counter and Pat was the Grammarian. Helene était le Table Topics Master. Pat, Demetri, Steven, Nirva, Cheryl, and Linda answered the Table Topics questions.

Steven était notre Toastmaster et a choisi le thème de la Saint Valentin. Nous accueillons notre dernier membre, Mokhtar. Les invités incluaient Demetri et Natenniel.
Militza était l'Évaluateur Général. Les 2 mots du jour était : enamored en anglais et adorer en français. Cheryl, Nirva, Steven et Helene ont utilisé un des mots du jour.
Nous avons eu deux présentateurs excellents. Colette a fait un discours en français (avec des diapos en anglais) sur ses expériences à sa maison de retraite. Mokhtar a donné son discours Briser la Glace, sur sa vie entre le Maroc et les États-Unis. Temple a fait l'évaluation (évaluateur pour la première fois) du discours de Colette et Nirva a évalué le discours de Mokhtar. Le chronométreur était Demetri, un invité. Temple était le compteur d'hésitations et Pat la grammairienne. Helene était le Table Topics Master. Pat, Demetri, Steven, Nirva, Cheryl, et Linda ont répondu aux questions de Table Topics.
